Yield Farming Looks Flashy. But Does It Actually Beat Boring Old LP Provision?

Scroll through any DeFi Twitter thread or Discord server and you'll find someone hyping a yield farm with a four-digit APY. "Just deposit into this protocol, stake your LP tokens, collect the rewards — easy money." It sounds compelling. It looks compelling. And compared to the relatively modest returns of straightforward liquidity provision, yield farming can feel like leaving free money on the table if you skip it.

But here's an uncomfortable question nobody's asking loudly enough: when you actually do the math, does yield farming win?

Spoiler: sometimes yes, often no, and the answer depends on variables most people don't bother to calculate before they deposit.

Let's Define What We're Actually Comparing

First, let's get clear on the two strategies.

Basic LP Provision means depositing a token pair into a liquidity pool on a DEX like DuckSwap and earning a share of the trading fees generated by that pool. Your returns come from one source: swap volume. More trades through your pool = more fees for you. It's relatively straightforward, and your principal stays accessible.

Yield Farming layers additional complexity on top. You typically still provide liquidity, but then you take your LP tokens and stake them in a separate protocol or farm contract that distributes additional token rewards — often the protocol's own governance token — on top of your base fee income. The headline APY you see usually reflects the combined value of fees plus those token rewards.

On paper, yield farming is strictly better: same fees, plus extra tokens. In practice, it's rarely that clean.

The Hidden Costs That Eat Your Returns

Gas Fees Add Up Fast

Basic LP provision involves two transactions: deposit and (eventually) withdrawal. Yield farming often requires three to five or more: deposit into the pool, approve the farm contract, stake your LP tokens, periodically harvest rewards, possibly compound those rewards, and eventually unstake and withdraw. On Ethereum mainnet, each of those steps costs real money.

Let's say you're farming with $2,000. If gas costs run $15-$40 per transaction across the full cycle, you could easily spend $80-$150 in fees just to enter, manage, and exit the farm. On a $2,000 position, that's 4-7.5% of your principal gone before you've earned a cent. Basic LP provision might cost you $20-$30 total for the same capital.

L2 solutions have dramatically reduced this friction, but it's still a factor — especially if you're compounding rewards frequently.

Reward Token Volatility Is a Real Risk

This is the big one that yield farming enthusiasts tend to wave away. That 200% APY? It's denominated in the protocol's native token, which was worth $1.40 when you deposited and is now worth $0.23.

This happens constantly in DeFi. A new protocol launches with aggressive token emissions to attract liquidity. The APY looks incredible early on. Farmers pile in, collect tokens, and immediately sell them to lock in profits — which drives the token price down. Late entrants are earning high nominal APY on a token that's depreciating faster than they can sell it.

If you can't model the likely price trajectory of the reward token, you can't actually model your yield farming returns. And honest answer? Most people can't.

Lockup Periods and Opportunity Cost

Many yield farms include lockup mechanisms — your staked LP tokens may be locked for days, weeks, or longer. During that time, you can't rebalance, exit, or respond to market conditions. If the underlying assets in your LP pair move sharply while you're locked in, you're absorbing impermanent loss with no ability to adjust.

Basic LP provision, by contrast, gives you full flexibility. You can exit at any time. That optionality has real value that rarely shows up in APY comparisons.

Running the Numbers: A Simple Scenario

Let's sketch out a rough comparison for a $10,000 position over 90 days.

Scenario A: Basic LP on a mid-tier ETH/USDC pool

Scenario B: Yield Farm on the same pair with token rewards

Yield farming still wins in this scenario — but you're getting about 29 cents on the dollar compared to what the headline APY promised. And that's with a relatively optimistic depreciation assumption. If the reward token collapses 90%, your yield farm barely beats basic LP provision after gas.

The math gets even uglier if you factor in impermanent loss during a volatile 90-day window, or if you were locked in and couldn't exit when conditions shifted.

So When Does Yield Farming Actually Make Sense?

It's not all bad news for farming. There are real scenarios where it delivers:

The Framework: Ask These Questions Before You Farm

Before chasing any yield farm, run through this checklist:

  1. What's the reward token, and what's its real-world price history?
  2. What does the APY look like if the reward token drops 50%? 80%?
  3. What are the total gas costs to enter, manage, and exit?
  4. Is there a lockup, and what's my plan if the market moves against me?
  5. Is this protocol audited? Is the team doxxed or anonymous?
  6. Am I early enough to capture meaningful emissions before price compression?

If you can answer all six confidently, yield farming might be the right move. If you're fuzzy on even two or three, the boring LP play might actually put more money in your pocket.

The Bottom Line

Yield farming isn't a scam. But it is a trap for people who compare headline APYs without doing the math underneath. Basic LP provision on DuckSwap — collecting real trading fees from real volume in liquid pairs — is a genuinely competitive strategy that gets undersold because it doesn't have a flashy token attached to it.

Sometimes the duck that just paddles steadily across the pond beats the one chasing every shiny thing on the surface.
